What to wear to a job interview when “professional” is not a dress code.

Match the workplace and interview format, then remove the detail that will distract you.

Clothing pieces arranged into a polished interview outfit

A law-firm meeting, startup video call, retail role, and creative portfolio review can call for different levels of structure. Read the workplace, then choose clothes that let you concentrate on the conversation.

Ask three questions

  1. How does the workplace dress? Check the company site, employee photos, and the person you are meeting. Match the polish without copying a costume.
  2. How will you interview? A video call needs a considered top and a comfortable lower half. An in-person meeting needs shoes and layers that survive travel.
  3. What will you keep adjusting? Remove a tight waistband, noisy jewelry, slippery shoe, or fussy layer before it steals your attention.

Three starting formulas

Structured workplace

Try a suit or a clean blazer-and-trouser combination with a simple shirt or knit and a polished shoe. Keep the accessories quiet.

Smart-casual workplace

Pair one tailored piece with one relaxed piece: a blazer with dark denim, or a fine knit with a pressed trouser. Let the shoe finish the outfit.

Creative or customer-facing role

Start with a simple base and add one point of personality through color, texture, or shape. One clear detail reads better than several competing ones.

Outfitr can test the full look from your closet. Upload the pieces, describe the role and interview format, ask the stylist for a recommendation, and use try-on to inspect the silhouette. Save the version that leaves your attention free for the interview.
