A summer wedding can mean a beach ceremony, a garden reception, or an evening ballroom. The invitation sets the level of formality; the venue sets the practical details. Use both before you choose a color, fabric, or shoe.
Three starting formulas
Beach or outdoor ceremony
Try a breathable midi or a relaxed linen suit with a polished shoe that handles uneven ground. Carry a light layer for wind and keep accessories easy to remove.
Garden or daytime reception
Pair a soft blazer with a separate trouser, or a printed midi with a block heel or dressy flat. Choose enough structure for photos and enough air for the heat.
Evening or black tie
Follow the stated code. A tuxedo or floor-length gown carries the formality without asking a casual outfit to do too much work.
Check the outfit against the day
- Can you walk from the ceremony to the reception in the shoes?
- Will the layer work after the sun goes down?
- Does the outfit leave white and bridal-looking details to the couple?
- Can you sit, eat, and dance without adjusting it every few minutes?
